I'm feeling emotional about the election results this morning.
I'm mad that our school levy failed. (Remember that worst case scenario I mentioned? Yep.) Right or wrong, that's how I feel about it.
I'm sad that this is just another effect of this economy. People are struggling, and I totally understand that some people literally could not afford the increase. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that public schools will have to make (huge) cuts, that our home values will continue to go down, and that a good education for "free" is not a realistic expectation in 2012.
I'm worried about the future for my kids. What programs will they cut? Will Katy have art and music next year? How big will they allow the class sizes to get? Will it get bad enough that we would consider other options? But we can't afford any other option?
Hopefully I'm being overly dramatic, but $20 million is a lot of money. We will feel it, I'm certain of that.

Emily I am so sorry. Have you considered home schooling?
Oh Emily I was so sad to hear about this last night. As a community I hope you all come together to make the best of this. You have already started your girl scout troop and you can get actively involved in the sports and music and art programs. Does the school have a strong PTA? If not then maybe now is the time to crank it up!
We have similar issues here at CPS and I am on a mission to help out!
Oh, yes, I have definitely considered homeschooling. I have several friends who do. There are a list of reasons right now that I don't think that's the choice that's best for our family. But if our district got into dire straights, I would certainly consider it again.
I'm right there with you....mad, sad, and worried, too. :(
Also, Pam, our building has a pretty good PTA in place. I've been going to the meetings, haven't been overly involved yet. And I'm glad that Girl Scouts has nothing to do with the levy so we can continue that. But yes - it's good to turn these emotions into action.
I was surprised that several schools around here actually passed levies. I'm with you, though, it's so frustrating. I know if our school district had tried to pass more funding, it would have failed. I guarantee it. As it is they've already cut so much because of state cuts. It's sad. Zachariah already doesn't have art (kind of) because there is no art teacher in their building. They do "art" projects with their classroom teacher, but it's not the same. I wish we cared more about our schools in general. Sad.
