Safety City

If you lived in Ohio the summer before you started kindergarten, you may remember a program called Safety City. It seems to be pretty popular in Ohio - I remember it, Brian does, and many of my friends do as well. Katy just completed it and I can't say enough about how great it was. The part that most people remember is riding bikes around in the little town with working stop lights, but there was so much more than that. Over a two week period, they learned about stranger danger, calling 911, learning address and phone number, fire safety, car and bus safety, poison safety, gun safety, water safety, tornado drills, crossing the street, and animal safety. I am the daughter of a retired police officer, so this stuff is important to me.

They also had a super cute graduation ceremony, which my dad (the retired PO) and Sue were able to attend since it coincided with Luke's birthday. The kids sang songs about safety and each got to receive a certificate. Then there were several photo ops. My kids love these characters.

The most famous 5 minutes of the program

Proud Grandpa. (Sorry about my very basic use of Photoshop. But this IS about safety)

When Katy saw this guy outside the school one day, she laughed under her breath and said, "I think that's just a person in a costume."

These little guys talk and move (even spray water) when the officers are operating them. David LOVED seeing these each morning.
Fun times! David is already asking when he will get to go.

I'm sad Rachel didn't go, but I'm comforting myself with the fact that I didn't go when I was 5, and I still learned all of the safety rules....So glad Katy loved it!

Here it is called Safety Village and Harper loved it last year. We were at a park a couple of weeks ago and saw this year's session all set up (they do the little town in a school parking lot). Michael is already excited for his turn.

Harper just saw her safety village helper at the library yesterday and it was like a celebrity sighting! :-)
