I tried to trim Katy's bangs myself once. No, maybe twice. Both times I ended up taking her back to the salon to get it fixed within a few days. I remember that one of the times was right after David was born, so then all of his newborn pictures are plagued with the choppy banged toddler next to him:

That cute baby is thinking, "Keep me away from mom's scissors." |
So I never even tried to cut David's hair. Took him right to the kids' salon (which we love) to the tune of $15 a pop, after coupon and tip. And I preferred a scissor cut to clippers, so it had to be done every 6-8 weeks.
Recently it occurred to me while running my fingers through Luke's hair that soon that cost would double as I need to take TWO boys to get haircuts every 6-8 weeks. Yikes! Money's tight for us as it is for everyone right now, so I took a deep breath and started to watch some YouTube videos on how to cut boys' hair. And in the end -
this blog post was the one that I found most helpful.
And then I tried it. I used a combo of clippers and scissors. We already had this stuff because Brian has been cutting his own hair for years (obviously).

Nervous Mommy and David During (I did actually nick his ear - poor kid!) |

Side view after - Katy said, "Ahhh...I think David looks cute with that hair cut!" |

Cute indeed |
I'm pretty happy with it, especially for my first try. I'm cautiously optimistic that I'll be able to cut hair on all 3 of them and save some signifcant cash over the years. And hopefully my technique will improve too. Another effect of the economy: cutting my kids' hair myself!

Great job! He looks adorable. He has a nice, round head, too, without a lot of angles . . . so you should only get better with confidence. :-)
Looks good to me!! My friend who used to work at a hair cuttery is now going to do it on her own so she will keep the scissors/clippers out of my hands for a little while longer!
You did a great job!! Another reason why I wish we lived close to you--you'd make a killing off me on birthday cakes and haircuts- LOL! You should consider a move to PA (Philly area)
Good for you! I take both to the local barber - it's an old fashioned and much loved part of the community so I hate to stop going. BUT it costs me ~ $30 with tip for both so might just have to copy you and give it a go.
Maybe I can get a tutorial in person sometime! I tried cutting Michael's hair once and it was a total disaster - but maybe I can learn.
I'm impressed Em.
