Bring It: Seasonal Allergy Advice

Until a few weeks ago, I counted myself in the lucky camp that did not suffer from seasonal allergies. But for the last 4 weeks, I've had a scratchy throat, runny nose, and I can't stop sneezing. I was hopeful at first that I had caught one of David's colds, but as the weeks went on, I had to concede that I think I have allergies.

So what's the deal? Am I destined now to suffer every spring and summer for the rest of my life? How long does the season last? Are there ups and downs? What are the best remedies? I've tried generic Zyrtec and Claritin, which both helped but didn't provide complete relief. Is it possible that it's related to the fact that I've been emptying closets and stirring up all kinds of dust in this house for the last month?

(BTW - T minus 5 days until we move. Yikes!)

Matt and I both use a prescription nasal spray and over the counter Zyrtec during the "bad" season. So you may need to get with a doctor for a Rx.

As far as duration - it can be really different depending on what you are specifically allergic to, although spring and fall are both peak times for allergies in our area. Good luck, allergies are no fun.

I have discovered it really makes a difference to be consistent. Zyrtec works for us, but works best if we take it consistenly. I notice a definite difference if I miss days here and there.

I too developed alergies later in life. Mine happen to be yearly but worse during spring/summer. I got a prescription for Alegra from my doctor. Claritin works ok for me but not as well as the prescription and to be honest with the generic brand and my insurance the Rx is cheaper then the over the counter. Good luck...yay for moving day so soon!

I think the moving dust has probably pushed you over the edge. For me it's cumulative... regular allergies don't take me down until I'm ALSO around smokers, or spending the day with a dog/cat, etc. THEN I'm miserable. Benadryl with knock it OUT (but you, too). Showering after working with dust, etc, seems to help me in addition to the pharmacy I put into my body every day. My cocktail includes Singulair (precript)and generic zyrtec.
