Recipe for a Quiet Morning

Ingredients:

1 napping baby

1 toddler who likes to do puzzles

1 box of puzzles

5' x 5' floor space

0 plans to use the space for at least an hour

1 digital camera to document the occasion (optional)

Step 1: Remove each puzzle from the box, one at a time, dumping the pieces into a pile.

Step 2: Spread out the puzzle boards for easy access.

Step 3: Retrieve a puzzle piece from the pile, one at a time, locate the appropriate puzzle, and place it in its rightful place.

Step 4: Once in a while, pick up a piece and yell, "One for mommy!" just so she doesn't feel left out.

Step 5: Carry as many pieces as possible for maximum efficiency. Extras may be stored under spare cheeks and chins.

Step 6: As a puzzle is completed, place it back in the puzzle box...

Step 7: ...until all the puzzles are done.

Step 8: Repeat if necessary (it will be).

I remember that you asked me once if Harper had always been good at entertaining herself. The answer is probably not, but I seriously don't remember some of what she was like when she was really little. . . But this is exactly the type of thing she would do, and I totally encourage that kind of behavior! Lots of times she'll entertain herself by getting many things out at once (puzzles, or books, or Little People toys) and make a giant "mess" but I can let that go for a little peace and quiet.

Sounds like a lovely morning, and Katy gets more darling by the day.

This is an amazing twist on educational toys! Not only does Katy know how to work ONE puzzle . . . she can work 8 or 10 at a time!

Did you ever give her a Rubik's Cube?

Katy is truly amazing! The fact that she knows so many puzzles and can re-organize them just blows me away. If I got all Jack's puzzles out he'd throw them all over the room, down the toilet and in the dog bowl. Then he'd run off and I'd have to pick it all up. Typical boy I hope?

I loved the pictures of David - he's such a handsome and happy child. And those eyes!! He's going to be a lady killer.

What good organizing skills Katy has! Just wait until she starts doing the 1,000 piece ones--she'll be great at it. When she gets ready, we have plenty of them. Our family loves to do big puzzles (every vacation, cabin trip, etc.), but there's always a struggle to see who puts in the last piece.

By the way, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Emily! Thanks for being such a good friend of our family.

Hope you have a great birthday today!

BTW - there was no time for playing peanut while camping. We'll have to have a girls' weekend so we can play sometime.
